Deep Desulfurization of Fuel Diesels Using Alkyl Sulfate and Nitrate Containing Imidazolium as Ionic Liquids
Authors
Abstract:
1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate [Etmim][EtSO4 ],1, 3-dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate [Mmim][MeSO4 ] and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate [Omim][NO3 ] ionic liquids have been used in thermal oxidative desulfurization of model fuel oils consisting of 500 ppm solutions of benzothiophene (BT) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) in dodecane. The efficiency of sulfur removal from BT and DBT solutions by these ILs as well as the effect of anion and cation chain length have also been investigated. The ILs studied performed pretty efficiently in removal of sulfur containing compounds and sulfur contents have been reduced to 18-27% following the order below: [Mmim][MeSO4 ] > [Etmim][EtSO4 ] > [Omim][NO3 ]. To further study the performance of the ILs studied, multiple extractions of BT and DBT solutions were also carried out to reduce sulfur content to 81% and 68% for DBT and BT solutions, respectively, after 5 extraction cycles. These environmentally friendly ILs could also be quantitatively regenerated and were shown to be as efficient in sulfur removal after 5 regeneration cycles.

Surfactant properties of ionic liquids containing short alkyl chain imidazolium cations and ibuprofenate anions.
Interfacial tension, electrical conductivity, NMR self-diffusion and DLS experiments have been used to investigate the self-aggregation in water of ionic liquids associating an ibuprofenate anion and 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium [C(n)MIm](+) (n = 4, 6, 8) cations. Despite the short alkyl chain on imidazolium cations (n ≤ 8), these ionic liquids exhibit particularly low Critical Aggregation Conce...
full textOxidative desulfurization of fuel oil by pyridinium-based ionic liquids.
In this work, an N-butyl-pyridinium-based ionic liquid [BPy]BF(4) was prepared. The effect of extraction desulfurization on model oil with thiophene and dibenzothiophene (DBT) was investigated. Ionic liquids and hydrogen peroxide (30%) were tested in extraction-oxidation desulfurization of model oil. The results show that the ionic liquid [BPy]BF(4) has a better desulfurization effect. The best...

Inexpensive and low-viscosity Protic Acidic Ionic Liquids (PAILs) of N-metheyl-2-pyrrolidone formate, acetate, and propionate abbreviated as [Hnmp][HCOO], [Hnmp][CH3COO] and [Hnmp][CH3CH2COO] respectively, were prepared and characterized by FT-IR and H-NMR. Deep oxidative and extractive desulfurization of a simulated oil and a real diesel containing 1000 ppm...
full textImidazolium ionic liquids containing selenium: synthesis and antimicrobial activity.
The synthesis and antimicrobial profile of imidazolium ionic liquids containing selenium are described herein. Minimum inhibitory concentration revealed that these compounds are especially active against algae, and their activity is modulated by substituents attached to the selenium moiety as well as by the counterion.

Sulfur-containing compounds in transportation fuels are converted by combustion to SOx, which is a major source of acid rain and air pollution [1]. For environmental protection pur‐ poses, many countries have mandated a reduction in fuels sulfur level down to 10 ppm by 2009 [2,3], and with more and more stringent regulatory constraints, it is a trend to achieve little-to-no sulfur fuels in the ...
